Usage Note

Doctorar is most commonly used reflexively — doctorarse means to complete a PhD and receive the title of doctor: se doctoró en física (she got her doctorate in physics). The non-reflexive form is less frequent and means to confer a doctorate on someone. It is a regular -ar verb.
