divorcio

divorce

noun dee-BOHR-syoh Rare

Origin: From Latin divortium.

Usage Note

Divorcio refers to the legal dissolution of marriage. Spain only legalised divorce in 1981, so the word carries some historical weight in Spanish cultural memory. The verb is divorciarse (to get divorced), which is reflexive: se divorciaron (they got divorced). Separación is the informal or legal separation that may precede divorcio.

Examples

"Pidieron el divorcio tras varios años de conflictos."

Natural Translation

They filed for divorce after several years of conflict.
