Dinero is the standard word for money in all varieties of Spanish; plata is widely used as slang for money in Latin America (and is the standard word in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay). Ganar dinero = 'to earn money'; ahorrar dinero = 'to save money'. El dinero no da la felicidad ('money can't buy happiness') is a well-known Spanish proverb.
