to dilute

verb dee-loo-EER Rare

Origin: From Latin diluere.

Usage Note

Diluir is an irregular verb of the -uir group; it inserts a y in stressed stems: diluyo, diluyes, diluye, etc. It is used literally (diluting a solution) and figuratively (diluir responsabilidades — to water down responsibilities). The reflexive diluirse means to become diluted or to fade away gradually.
