diarrea

diarrhea

noun dyah-RREH-ah Rare

Origin: From Greek diarrhoia (a flowing through), from dia- (through) + rhein (to flow).

Usage Note

Diarrea is the standard medical and everyday term; there is no euphemism in common use in Spanish the way 'tummy trouble' is used in English. The related adjective is diarreico. In Latin America and Spain alike this is the direct, neutral word used by doctors and in everyday speech without register concerns.

Examples

"El niño tuvo diarrea por dos días."

Natural Translation

The child had diarrhea for two days.
