Diagonal functions as both an adjective and a noun. As a feminine noun (la diagonal) it means a diagonal line or direction: cortar en diagonal ('to cut diagonally'). In geometry it is the line connecting non-adjacent vertices of a polygon. It is also the name of a famous avenue in Barcelona.
