danza

dance

noun DAHN-sah Rare

Origin: Possibly from Old High German dansōn (to drag, to move in a line); entered Spanish via Old French.

Usage Note

Danza often refers to formal or artistic dance (ballet, flamenco), while baile covers social or popular dancing. The distinction is not absolute, but danza clásica sounds natural and baile clásico less so. The verb for both is bailar.

Examples

"La danza flamenca es muy expresiva."

Natural Translation

Flamenco dance is very expressive.
