Usage Note

Las Cortes (always plural, always with the definite article) is the name of Spain's bicameral national parliament, consisting of the Congreso de los Diputados (lower house) and the Senado (upper house). The seed gender 'f' reflects this plural feminine usage. Historically the term referred to the medieval representative assemblies of Iberian kingdoms.
