contiguo
adjacent; adjoining
adjective kohn-TEE-gwoh Rare
Origin: From Latin 'contiguus', from 'contingere' (to touch).
Usage Note
Contiguo describes something that physically shares a border or wall with something else — closer contact than cercano (nearby) or próximo (proximate). It agrees in gender and number: la habitación contigua (f), los edificios contiguos (m pl). It is a formal or written-register word; in speech al lado de ('next to') is usually preferred. Do not confuse it with continuo (continuous), which looks similar.
Examples
"El jardín está en el terreno contiguo."
Natural Translation
The garden is on the adjoining plot.
