consiguiente

consequent

adjective kohn-see-GYEN-teh Rare

Also means

resulting

Usage Note

Consiguiente is most common in the fixed phrase por consiguiente (therefore, consequently), a formal connector equivalent to por lo tanto. As a standalone adjective it means 'resulting' or 'attendant' (los gastos consiguientes = the resulting costs). It is a false friend for English 'consequent' in a limited way — it is almost always used formally.

Examples

"No había luz y, por consiguiente, no pudimos leer."

Natural Translation

There was no light and, consequently, we couldn't read.
