Comarcal is derived from comarca (a territorial district or county), a unit of regional administration used in Spain, particularly in Catalonia, Aragon, and the Basque Country. Una carretera comarcal is a secondary or county road (as opposed to a national highway). The word has no exact equivalent in Latin American Spanish, where municipal or provincial fill a similar role.
