colegio
school
noun koh-LEH-hyoh Less Common
Origin: From Latin collegium (association, community).
Also means
college
Usage Note
Colegio in Spain typically means a primary or secondary school (not a university — that is universidad). In Latin America it can extend to secondary schools or, in some countries, higher institutions. A false friend for English speakers: it does NOT mean 'college' in the US sense (a degree-granting institution). Colegio mayor is a university hall of residence.
Examples
"Los niños van al colegio a las ocho."
Natural Translation
The children go to school at eight.
