Usage Note

Chófer (also spelled chofer in Latin America, without the accent) means a professional driver — a taxi driver, chauffeur, or bus driver. In Spain the accented form chófer is standard (RAE); in Latin America chofer (with stress on the second syllable, cho-FER) is common. It is a masculine noun: el chófer, with feminine la chófer used in modern usage for a female driver.

"El chófer esperó frente al hotel toda la mañana."
