Cerro refers to a standalone hill or rounded hilltop, smaller than a montaña and less dramatic than a pico. It is especially common in Latin American place names: Cerro de la Silla (Monterrey), Cerro Rico (Bolivia). In Spain, colina or otero is more commonly used for a gentle hill. The diminutive cerrito is affectionate and common in place names.
