caso

case

noun KAH-soh Common

Origin: From Latin casus (a fall, event).

Also means

instance

Usage Note

Caso appears in many fixed expressions: en todo caso (in any case/at any rate), en caso de (in the event of), hacer caso (to pay attention / to heed — no me hace caso means 'he ignores me'). El caso es que… ('the thing is that…') is a very common spoken opener. Be careful: caso is not used for a legal 'case' in the sense of a lawsuit — that is juicio or pleito.

Examples

"En ese caso, llamamos al médico."

Natural Translation

In that case, we'll call the doctor.
