caracterizado
characterised
adjective kah-rak-teh-ree-SAH-doh Rare
Also means
disguised (in costume)
Usage Note
Caracterizado is the past participle of caracterizar used as an adjective. In one sense it means 'characterised by' or 'notable for' a quality (una región caracterizada por su gastronomía). In theatrical and everyday Spanish, however, ir caracterizado or estar caracterizado means to be in costume or disguise — dressed as a character — a sense that does not exist for the English cognate 'characterised'. Learners reading carnival or theatre texts should be aware of this second meaning.
Examples
"El actor salió caracterizado de villano."
Natural Translation
The actor came out in villain costume.
