Usage Note

Capa in its most common modern sense is a layer — of paint, soil, atmosphere, or data. Its older meaning of a long cloak survives in the bullfighting phrase torear de capa and in the superhero concept. The phrase capa de ozono (ozone layer) is one of the most familiar uses, and capas sociales refers to social strata.
