canary (bird)
Usage Note
Canario as an adjective means 'from the Canary Islands' (las Islas Canarias), and as a masculine noun it refers to a male Canarian or the bright yellow canario songbird. The female Canarian is canaria. The bird's name comes from the islands, not the other way around — the archipelago was named after the large dogs (canis in Latin) found there by Roman explorers.
Examples
"El canario canta muy bien."
Natural Translation
The canary sings very well.
