Becar is a transitive verb meaning to award a beca (scholarship or grant) to someone — the university beca outstanding students, the government becó a hundred researchers. The more common construction in everyday Spanish is the reflexive or passive: fue becado por el ministerio (he was awarded a scholarship by the ministry). The noun beca is far more frequent than the verb.
