Barroco describes the 17th-century European artistic and architectural style characterized by drama, movement, and elaborate detail. Spain produced some of its finest examples: el arte barroco español includes Velázquez and Zurbarán. In everyday speech barroco can simply mean excessively ornate or fussy, applied to anything from prose style to interior decor.
