bóveda
vault, dome
noun BOH-beh-dah Less Common
Origin: From Vulgar Latin volvita, from volvere ('to turn'), related to English 'vault'.
Also means
cellar, crypt
Usage Note
Bóveda refers to an arched stone or brick ceiling structure in architecture, and also to an underground chamber — bóveda de cañón (barrel vault), bóveda celeste (the vault of the sky). In Latin America it also commonly means a burial vault or mausoleum. The accent on the first syllable makes it a proparoxytone — three-syllable stress on the first.
Examples
"La bóveda de la catedral es impresionante."
Natural Translation
The vault of the cathedral is impressive.
