autovía

dual carriageway

noun ah-oo-toh-BEE-ah Rare

Also means

motorway (Spain)

Usage Note

Autovía in Spain refers to a high-speed divided road similar to a motorway but without a toll and with at-grade access points — distinct from autopista (a full motorway, often with a toll and grade-separated junctions). Outside Spain the distinction is less observed. Do not confuse autovía with autopista when discussing Spanish traffic regulations or infrastructure.
