atrever

to dare

verb ah-treh-BEHR Less Common

Usage Note

Atrever is almost always used reflexively: atreverse a + infinitive (to dare to do something). No me atrevo means 'I don't dare'. It is a regular -er verb in all forms. Do not confuse with atravesar (to cross/traverse), which looks and sounds similar.

Examples

"No se atrevió a decir la verdad."

Natural Translation

He didn't dare tell the truth.
