Usage Note

Astillero is where ships are built and repaired. Spain has a long shipbuilding tradition; the Basque Country and Galicia are historically important astilleros regions. The word comes from astilla (splinter/chip of wood), reflecting the craft's origins. Astillero should not be confused with arsenal (naval depot) or dársena (dock).
