asma

asthma

noun AHS-mah Rare

Origin: From Greek asthma, 'panting.'

Usage Note

Asma is grammatically feminine despite ending in -a with an initial stressed 'a': you say el asma with the masculine article in the singular (to avoid the clash of two 'a' sounds), but the adjective remains feminine — el asma crónica. This is the same pattern as el agua fría or el hambre.

Examples

"El niño tiene asma y usa un inhalador."

Natural Translation

The child has asthma and uses an inhaler.
