Aprobar is a stem-changing verb (o→ue): apruebo, apruebas, etc. In academic contexts it specifically means to pass a subject or exam — aprobé el examen — contrasting with suspender ('to fail'). In legislative contexts aprobar una ley means to pass a law. The noun aprobado ('a pass') is the lowest passing grade in the Spanish grading system, above suspenso.
