Usage Note
Penúltimo is the standard Spanish word for 'second-to-last' and is used in everyday speech far more freely than English 'penultimate'. It is an esdrújula word, stressed on the ú, which the written accent marks (pe-NÚL-ti-mo). The feminine is penúltima. There is a drinkers' custom of ordering la penúltima rather than la última ('the last one'), a half-joking refusal to admit the night is ending.
Examples

Natural Translation
