Usage Note
Adoptado is the past participle of adoptar used as an adjective, applied to children, measures, or decisions. When referring to a person, hijo adoptado (adopted child) is common, though hijo adoptivo is also correct and slightly more formal. The two forms are largely interchangeable for people but adoptado is more common for measures: la decisión adoptada.
