abrevadero

watering trough

noun ah-breh-bah-DEH-rroh Rare

Usage Note

Abrevadero is the traditional stone or concrete trough found at roadsides or in fields where livestock drink. It derives from abrevar (to water animals), itself from Latin ad bibere. In rural Spain many village squares still have a historic abrevadero that doubles as a landmark. Do not confuse with bebedero (a small drinking vessel for birds or pets).

Examples

"Las vacas se acercaron al abrevadero."

Natural Translation

The cows approached the watering trough.
